  6. Wacha, Cardinals Take Series from Cubs

Michael Wacha continued his strong start to the season, and Matt Carpenter drove in three runs as the St. Louis Cardinals (7-5) captured a series win with a 6-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs (4-8) on a damp, overcast Sunday at Busch Stadium.

The Redbird starting pitcher took a while to settle in. Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo hit a first-pitch fastball into the seats to give Chicago a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Cubs starter Edwin Jackson (0-1) was also rocked early, as Carpenter (1-4, SAC, 3 RBI) stroked a two-out, two-run single in the second frame, followed by a Kolten Wong (2-4, RBI) base hit to establish a 3-2 lead for the home team.

After a 46-minute rain delay, Wacha (2-0) settled in after a Welington Castillo single tied the game 3-3 in the fourth. The righty retired seven Cubs in a row at one point, and allowed three runs on five hits in 6.1 innings of work.

Carpenter gave his team the edge for good on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth, and the Cardinals tacked on two insurance runs in the eighth on a Jhonny Peralta (2-4, RBI) single and a Peter Bourjos (1-4, 3B, RBI) screamer mishandled by Chicago third baseman Mike Olt.

Closer Trevor Rosenthal (SV 4) entered with a 6-3 edge in the ninth. He allowed a Junior Lake triple with one out, followed by an Olt base hit to make it 6-4. After hitting Castillo with a pitch, Rosenthal shut the door, inducing a flyout and groundout to seal the series win.

Now the Cardinals hit the road for a set with the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers, who have won nine games in a row. Lance Lynn is scheduled to duel with Matt Garza Monday night, and you can hear it on ESPN 103.1 / 1580 AM KTGR.
