AL Blanks NL, Earns World Series Home Field
The American League held the National League to three hits all night, as three separate rallies helped the AL cruise to a 3-0 victory in the 84th All-Star Game at Citi Field.
Jose Bautista’s sacrifice fly put the AL on the board in the fourth, and JJ Hardy added another on a fifth-inning fielder’s choice groundout. Jason Kipnis had the only run-scoring hit, officially, with his RBI-double in the eighth, scoring Royals catcher Salvador Perez.
The moment of the game came when All-Star MVP Mariano Rivera negotiated a perfect eighth inning in his final All-Star Game.
Among the local interests, former Missouri Tiger Max Scherzer started out well for the AL, striking out one batter in a perfect first. Yadier Molina and Matt Carpenter each were hitless in two at-bats, while Allen Craig lined out in a pinch-hit effort in the eighth. Carlos Beltran had one of the three NL hits, with David Wright of the Mets and Paul Goldschmidt of the Diamondbacks providing the others.
Edward Mujica failed to get in the game for the NL, and Greg Holland faced two batters, retiring one and allowing a hit. Salvador Perez garnered a hit and a run scored, while teammate Alex Gordon flew out in his only at bat.
